Have we learned nothing from Metallica? Century Media is one of the biggest metal labels around however it’s just bitten the hand that feeds them by hiring a New Jersey-based attorney to file suit against over 7,000 BitTorrent users for illegally downloading and sharing albums by Lacuna Coil and Iced Earth, a move that we’re sure will endear them to headbangers.
.
According to northjersey.com, Jay R. McDaniel has filed 17 suits and plans to file thousands more for copyright infringement. “What’s critical to these cases, and what many people don’t understand, is that it’s the distribution that is the evil influence,” he told the paper. “It’s the distribution that does the real damage and harm, not just to the client but to the culture industries and to creative endeavors in general.”
.
Two of the suits are aimed toward stopping the illegal distribution of Lacuna Coil’s most recent disc Dark Adrenaline with 3,136 defendants in the case while 4,327 metal heads are being brought up on charges that they illegally distributed Iced Earth’s 2011 album Dystopia. However the bands aren’t on board and now Iced Earth’s John Schaffer spoke out about the suit on the band’s site explaining, “It has come to my attention that Century Media is suing fans over illegal downloaded of, among others, our latest album.I felt it was important to clarify that we had no knowledge of this motion, and were, sadly, not asked permission.”
.
“We all know the music industry is changing,” he added. “We have been adapting to this model by embracing legal streaming services such as Spotify and by bringing our music to places we have never played before by touring our proverbial asses off. As much as we respect that the labels are having a harder time selling music, we feel this is a misguided effort and want to make sure our fans know we would have not given our consent would we have been asked.”
.
So what do you think of Century Media suing fans for downloading and distributing their albums? Let us know in the comments section below as you listen to some Iced Earth Radio.
